Here are a few books worth checking out. What’s on your bookshelf?

1) A Walk On The Beach: Tales of Wisdom By An Unconventional Woman by Joan Anderson. A woman in the middle of an identity crisis meets an inspiring elderly neighbor who brings her back to life. A wonderful book that demands several readings.

2) Between Two Worlds: The Inner Lives of Children of Divorce by Elizabeth Marquardt. To really understand what it’s like for your stepchildren, do them a favor and read this book. Then give it to your partner and his ex. It’s based on a landmark study of kids whose parents divorce, and is written in an accessible and engaging style.

3) I’m Not Julia Roberts by Laura Ruby. This novel by a stepmom of two tells the story of a stepfamily from the point of view of many different players in this complicated family structure. Hilarious and heartbreaking.

4) The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work by John M. Gottman, Ph.D. One of the foremost marriage experts in the country, Gottman created this step-by-step guide after observing couples in his lab at the Gottman Institute in Seattle, Wash. You’ll never roll your eyes the same way again.

5) Why Do I Love These People? Understanding, Surviving, And Creating Your Own Family by Po Bronson. After interviewing 700 families across the United States, Bronson chose 19 stories to illustrate how family relationships work. An engrossing book that leaves you hopeful.
